What can you power with a Lion Energy Prowler portable power station? Does this make sense to have with you?
What is the Lion Energy Prowler power bank?
Lion Energy is a company that makes power systems from small, portable power banks like the Prowler all the way to big, commercial power stations. The company has a well-deserved reputation for building a quality product and has been around a while.
In other words, I trust them to make a good product and have yet to be disappointed.
The Lion Prowler, specifically, is a small power bank that’s about the size of a thinner novel. It’s well suited for being something you have with you on a regular basis to recharge things like phones, headphones, watches and most of the personal electronics that many of us carry with us.
It can also recharge tablets, e-readers and laptops.
There are four power outlets on the unit under a rubber cover; two USB-A outlets and a USB-C outlet, each of which are good for 3 amps at five volts.
The USB-C port is also good as an incoming charging port as is a Micro USB port.
There is also an induction charger on the surface of this device so, with a compatible phone or other induction-compatible device you can turn on the charging surface and just plop your phone down on it. This is pretty convenient but the wireless charger functionality is only good for about 10 watts.
I have an iPhone 16 and that phone can take up to 25 watts of charge so you’re better off just using a cable if you are in any sort of a hurry. Plus you can hold the phone and still read the StressLess Camping website while charging your phone so bonus. 🤓
How much power is in a Lion Energy Prowler
The battery itself is made of lithium polymer and has about 74 watt hours of reserves in it.
This is about the same specifications of performance, size and chemistry as the battery on my MacBook Pro so that translates into a single charge of my laptop, for example.
Lion Energy’s website states that it would take about eight hours to recharge from zero to hero. Okay.
What do we use these for
We bought two of these in Quartzsite this past year and we’ve used the heck out of them.
When we’re off-grid camping I use them to charge our phones and watches overnight using a wireless charging stand that also enables the night stand mode on our phones.
I also keep these in the box with all our camera junk which inevitably seems to be discharged right when we want to use it. So, it’s an easy problem to solve by just plugging any of these devices into the charger.
I also used this recently when I visited City of Rocks State Park, which is a dark sky zone. I wanted to take an overnight video of the park and the first night the GoPro just died after a short while. It always does.
So I plugged in one of these power banks and the GoPro lasted the whole night. Even better, the power bank was only down by about half so I could still use it to charge up my phone and watch even without recharging it.
Solar panels
As part of the deal we got in Quartzsite, Lion Energy also mailed us ten watt solar panels. These aren’t going to refuel your EV but they can top off one of these power banks. But you’re going to need good sun all day long to really accomplish a lot with a solar panel of that size.
But since the solar panel has holes on all four corners I think the idea is to hang it on your backpack or something like that and recharge the power bank while you’re hiking or whatever.
Actually, that’s not a bad use of this whole package.
What about refurbished units?
Something I’ve seen Lion Energy do a lot is sell refurbished units. To my knowledge these are units that get sold and then returned, not necessarily ones that had issues.
With Lion Energy selling so many of these some people just don’t understand them and buy them and return them. Honestly I think this is a great way to get one of these at a smoking deal and the warranty on the refurbished units is also good.
My thoughts
For something that fits into your pocket that’s well made and well designed that can be an ace in the hole when you need to top off portable electronics, I don’t think you can go wrong with these.
